Bugis and Kampong Glam are dynamic areas in Singapore that beautifully blend rich history with modern attractions. Kampong Glam, whose name originates from the "gelam" tree (a type of eucalyptus that once grew abundantly in the area), was historically a hub for Malay royalty and the Muslim community. It was designated as a Malay-Muslim enclave by Sir Stamford Raffles in the 1820s and became home to the Sultan Mosque, traditional textile shops, and vibrant cultural practices. Meanwhile, Bugis gained its name from the Bugis people, a seafaring ethnic group from Indonesia who played a significant role in the area’s development as a bustling trade center.

Today, these neighborhoods are where tradition meets trend, offering a unique mix of historic sites, artistic expression, and modern attractions. Here are the must-visit attractions and experiences, categorized for your convenience:

Cultural and Historical Highlights

Arab Street

Stroll along Arab Street to soak in its unique Arabic flair. This area was historically a gathering spot for the Muslim community and is now lined with charming restaurants and shops, offering a taste of Middle Eastern culture in Singapore.

The Sultan Mosque

The Sultan Mosque is an iconic landmark of Bugis. Built in 1824 for Sultan Hussein Shah, it features a golden dome and stunning architecture. It’s a perfect spot for photography—don’t miss capturing a shot framed by the palm trees around the mosque.

Sifr Aromatics

Located on Arab Street, Sifr Aromatics is an independent niche perfume shop that crafts unique, personalized fragrances. They also offer perfume workshops and consultations, making it a special experience for fragrance enthusiasts. My favorites parfums are Pris and Kristal.

Food and Drink

Tarik

A must-visit spot for Teh Tarik lovers. Try the iced Teh Tarik,or ided Kopi offered with different spices and flavors such as pandan (for the sweeter taste) or karak (spice taste). Pair your drink with a kaya bun—a soft bun filled with Singapore’s famous coconut pandan jam.

Zam Zam Restaurant

A must-try when visiting Arab Street. Order their famous murtabak- I recommend the chicken version for its rich flavor and satisfying taste.

Warong Nasi Pariaman

This is one of the best Nasi Padang places in Singapore. Be sure to try the beef rendang—it’s absolutely delicious! Arrive early as they often sell out quickly and close by the afternoon. Run by the second generation, this restaurant is a testament to amazing food and tradition.

Albert Hawker Centre

Experience local food at this traditional hawker center. My favorite is the popiah stall, but there are plenty of other delicious options. Remember to bring cash for your purchases.

Golden Mile Food Centre

Another excellent hawker center in the area, offering a wide variety of dishes. Be mindful of the opening hours, as many stalls close early in the evening.

Golden Mile Tower

Craving Thai food? Head to Golden Mile Tower, where you’ll find a variety of authentic Thai eateries.

Nightlife and Bars

Atlas Bar

Known for housing one of the world’s most extensive gin collections—over 1,300 varieties—Atlas Bar is a luxurious spot for an evening out. Make a reservation in advance and adhere to the dress code: no slippers, Birkenstocks, shorts, or tank tops for men.

Bars Around Haji Lane

Haji Lane comes alive at night with its lively bar scene. Two popular spots include Bar Stories, known for its bespoke cocktails, and Blu Jaz Café, which offers live music and a relaxed atmosphere.

Bugis is a dynamic area with a rich history that dates back to its days as a trade hub for the Bugis people from Indonesia. Today, it’s a vibrant neighborhood where tradition meets trend, offering a unique mix of historic sites, artistic expression, and modern attractions. Don’t miss out on this lively district during your next visit to Singapore!
